The Competitive Skating Centre of Strathroy's Competitive Pairs Program
The Competitive Skating Centre of Strathroy offers a world class pair program. The program prepares each team for Sectional, National and International competitions. It is a full time commitment for the teams involved, and it addresses all aspects of their skating careers. The program meets all requirements of Skate Canada and the ISU, both physically and mentally, and prepares competitive pair teams for the challenges incurred in a successful competitive skating career.
The training schedule is based on a commitment of approx. 4-6 hours per day, 5 days a week, 11 months a year that is both demanding and rewarding. The teams work on pair team skills such as throws, lifts, spins and programs, while also continuing to develop themselves as individual skaters at the same time. The spring session is designed to develop the basic skills for the upcoming season through group work in all areas of the sport. The pair skaters spend 2-3 hours on the ice, plus 2-3 hours off ice, daily during this season.
During the summer season, the program is set specifically for each individual pair team and their goals for the season. Every pair competitor is responsible for both their single skating goals as well as their team commitment, which makes this a very demanding program both mentally and physically.
Each skater trains 5-7 hrs a day during this period of the season.
Once we are into the competition phase of our program, all the sessions are designed to develop the pair for their specific goals. The skaters are still two sport skaters, and time will be spent on singles as well as pair during the competition phase of the program. The commitment is a minimum of 5 hrs a day for each skater involved. Fitness is a big factor in the school and specifically for this program, as it is so demanding on the body.
The sessions involved in the pair program include group and individual lessons on ice for jumping, spinning, lifting, and throwing. Each team will receive choreography from Alison Purkiss throughout the year. Group lessons that are in the program include lift classes, stroking classes, fitness classes, flexibility classes, mental training, and off ice technique classes.
The school coaching staff all work with the athletes in the program to develop their specific skills.
The pair program enables the skaters to advance their careers in the sport as amateurs as well as taking the skills and applying them to future professional opportunities. CSCS is very proud of the pair program, and we believe it gives our school and athletes another opportunity to succeed in the sport of figure skating.
Results over the last 5 seasons proves that this program is a very successful and viable option for any skater wishing to become part of a pair team. CSCS performs an annual ice show, and the pair program is a big part of the show. We end our season with this show, and again it is a demanding and exciting part of the season.
Times vary each season so for a current season schedule please refer to the schedule/rates page. For further information or to schedule an interview please contact Mr. Scott Rachuk.
